Though many of us dream of large and feminine breasts, and some of us even select breast augmentation surgery to achieve this goal, others may be “blessed” with a contrasting problem.
Women with large breasts – at any age, by the way – may suffer greatly from the weight of the breasts: The shoulders girdle, neck, and back problems in the physical aspect, together with low body image and low self-confidence in the mental aspect. Women with large breasts may find it difficult to engage in sports, at times they might have deep grooves in their shoulders and even their posture is affected.
Breast reduction surgery at the TLV may be combined with breast lifting or with a tummy tuck surgery. In the vast majority of cases, the outcome is a woman with a renewed self-esteem and a body she loves. What else is important for you to know before you make a decision – here are all the answers.
What is a breast reduction surgery?
How is breast reduction surgery performed??
Before surgery
The preparation for the surgery begins with a meeting with the surgeon of your choice.
During this meeting, several parameters will be examined to determine the nature of the surgery, including the size of the breasts, the shape of the areolas and nipples, the characteristics of the skin in the area, and others.
At this point in time – where you will also specify your expectations – you will be able to decide whether a breast reduction will indeed satisfy your preferences or perhaps you would prefer a combined breast lift surgery. Another surgery that is combined at times with breast reduction is a tummy tuck surgery.
In any case, you may ask all your questions in the consult meeting and receive an advice, and direction, together with a comprehensive information about the course of the surgery and the recovery and healing process.
In addition, you will have to undergo a blood test and additional tests may be required, according to the surgeon’s decision. Additional general information will be collected and reviewed, including background diseases, medication use, smoking, as well as family history of breast cancer.
Post surgery
Breast reduction surgeries usually require a 24-hour hospital stay, with most of our patients feeling well enough to go outside a day or two after their return.
As with any surgery, you may feel pain and swelling – these are completely normal and will go away in a week or two. Of course, in the first days after surgery, you should avoid strenuous physical activity as much as possible.
Additional instructions after breast reduction surgery:
- Make sure you take antibiotics according to the order you receive.
- You will be instructed to sleep on your back for approx. 4 weeks.
- It is recommended to be patient and return to sports or strenuous activity only 4-5 months after the surgery, including picking up small children for example.
- Continue and undergo ultrasound and mammography scans as before the procedure. Pregnancies, breastfeeding and significant weight fluctuations may change the shape of the breasts.
Breast reduction surgery - possible complications
As in any surgical procedure, breast reduction surgery is not free of possible complications.
At the same time, of course, the choice of the operating doctor from every aspect has an effect on this possibility. In any case, you will receive a detailed explanation and methods of prevention before and after the surgery.
Possible complications:
- Unsightly scars
- Lack of symmetry
- Lack / excess sensation in the areola
- Infection
- Bleeding and hemorrhages – that are not diminishing and/or increasing
- Edemas – not disappearing after 4-6 months
- Venous thrombosis
- Necrosis of the areola, nipple or both
