Many women – especially when years go by and after undergoing pregnancies and breastfeeding – feel that the shape of their breasts have changed. Have changes to become droopy and deflated breasts.
They may not be interested in bigger breasts, but definitely miss the breasts they had when they were young. And so, breast lift surgery is one of the most popular surgeries we have here at the TLV medical center, and it only goes on and gains popularity as time and experience go by.
A breast lift surgery, unlike a breast augmentation surgery, is a corrective cosmetic breast surgery, but does not include implants. So if you are looking to bring back the full and firm breast look – this could be the surgery for you. What else? Here are the full details.
What is a breast lift surgery?
How is a breast lift surgery performed?
Breast lift surgery is an aesthetic surgical procedure which, as it name implies, is designed to lift the breasts from a droopy and deflated look to a full and firm look.
The common reasons for breast lift surgery are to restore breast fullness lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, and improve self-image.
There are several surgical techniques for performing this surgery and after meeting with our experts you will receive the detailed explanation that suits you personally.
At the same time, we can say that in each one of the techniques the goals are similar: Remove excess skin, shape and tighten the breasts upwards and also adjust the areola – as required and needed.
The preparation for the surgery begin with a meeting with the surgeon of your choice.
several parameters will be examined in this meeting. These will determine the nature of the surgery, including the prolapse degree, the shape of the areolas and nipples, the characteristics of the skin in the area, and more.
At this point in time – when you will also discuss your expectations – you can decide if breast lift will satisfy you, or you may prefer a combined breast augmentation or perhaps breast reduction – because, at times, the breasts are too heavy to go with just a breast lift. It will just drop again. By the way, another surgery that is combined at times with breast lift surgery is a tummy tuck surgery.
In any case, you may ask all your questions in the consult meeting and receive an advice, and direction, together with a comprehensive information about the course of the surgery and the recovery and healing process.
In addition, you will have to undergo a blood test and additional tests may be required, according to the surgeon's decision. Additional general information will be collected and reviewed, including background diseases, medication use, smoking, as well as family history of breast cancer.
Usually, you will be able to return home and even walk on your won on the same day as the surgery. Most of our patients also feel well enough to leave home after a day or two.
As with any surgery, you may feel pain and swelling – these are completely normal and will go away in a week or two. Of course, in the first days after surgery, you should avoid strenuous physical activity as much as possible.
You will likely be asked to wear a support bra for a while, but once the implants are fixed in place (sometimes they will seem a little high at first) you will be able to purchase new bras to match your current measurements.
Additional guidelines following breast lift surgery:
- Make sure you take antibiotics according to the order you receive.
- You will be instructed to sleep on your back for approx. 4 weeks.
- It is recommended to be patient and return to sports or strenuous activity only 4-5 months after the surgery, including picking up small children for example, you should add this to your considerations.
- Continue and undergo ultrasound and mammography scans as before the procedure. Also, it is advisable to add implants exams every once in a while.
- Pregnancies, breastfeeding, and significant weight fluctuations may change the shape of the breasts.
Breast lift surgery - possible complications
As in any surgical procedure, breast lift surgery is not free of possible complications.
