Let’s start with the fact that breast augmentation surgery is one of the most common in Israel, with tens of thousands surgeries performed every year.
In principle, breast augmentation surgery is suitable for any healthy woman who is interested in changing the structure and size of her breasts.
Some women choose to enlarge their breasts because they are not happy with a body not blessed with ample breasts – one of the clear symbols of femininity – and some choose to correct this or that asymmetry or deformity.
Today, more than ever before, our knowledge and experience at the TLV Medical Center concerning this surgery allow us to provide a full and appropriate response to any woman. What else you should know before taking the big step? Here are the details.
What is a breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation surgery is an aesthetic surgical procedure designed to enlarge your breasts and/or shape them, using silicone implants.
The final goal of the surgery is to improve your body’s proportions, when in principle there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ except your own choice. In other words: The precise breast augmentation is the one that is custom tailored for you personally.
The common reasons for breast augmentation surgery are restoring lost breast fullness after pregnancy and breastfeeding, improving self-image, redesigning body proportions and correcting asymmetry or deformity.
How is breast augmentation surgery performed?
We already mentioned that this is one of the most common procedures, and as such it is performed very professionally and efficiently. The surgery usually takes about one and a half hours, and you could be discharged within a few hours or next morning at the latest.
An incision is made during the surgery, usually under the breast – in an area that is not visible to the eye and determined together with you in the consultation meeting – through the incision the implants are inserted into a kind of ‘pouch’ created by the surgeon.
Of course, after the insertion of the implants and before closing the incision, the surgeon verifies that even in a standing position everything is located in place – the nipples, the breasts, and the space between them This is done by tilting the bed and putting you in a sitting position.
Before surgery
Preparations for surgery naturally begin with a meeting with the surgeon you have chosen. During this meeting we will help you choose the type of implants, their size and shape – according to your natural proportions and your goals.
In addition, you will receive a comprehensive explanation about the surgery and the recovery process.
In addition, you will have to undergo a blood test and additional tests may be required, according to the surgeon’s decision. Additional general information will be collected and reviewed, including background diseases, medication use, smoking, as well as family history of breast cancer.
Post surgery
Usually, you will be able to return home and even walk on your won on the same day as the surgery. Most of our patients also feel well enough to leave home after a day or two.
As with any surgery, you may feel pain and swelling – these are completely normal and will go away in a week or two. Of course, in the first days after surgery, you should avoid strenuous physical activity as much as possible.
You will likely be asked to wear a support bra for a while, but once the implants are fixed in place (sometimes they will seem a little high at first), you will be able to purchase new bras to match your current measurements.
Additional instructions after breast augmentation surgery:
- Make sure you take antibiotics according to the order you receive.
- You will be instructed to sleep on your back for approx. 4 weeks.
- It is recommended to wait patiently and return to sports or strenuous activity only after 4-5 months, including lifting weights like small children, for example.
- Continue with ultrasound and mammography exams as you used to be fore the procedure. Also, it is advisable to add implants exams every once in a while.
- Please note: Pregnancies, breastfeeding and significant weight fluctuations may change the shape of the breasts.
Breast augmentation surgery - possible complications
Like any surgical procedure, breast augmentation surgery is not free of possible complications.
At the same time, of course, the choice of the operating doctor from every aspect has an effect on this possibility. In any case, you will receive a detailed explanation and methods of prevention before and after the surgery.
Possible complications:
- Unsightly scars
- Lack of symmetry
- Lack of sensation
- Infection
- Bleeding and hemorrhages – that are not diminishing and/or increasing.
- Edemas – not disappearing after 4-6 months.
- Venous thrombosis
